WHAT IS ISO 14001?

The ISO 14000 family represents a set of globally recognized standards for Environmental Management Systems (EMS), with ISO 14001 being the principal standard. ISO 14001 specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and improving an EMS applicable to any business or organization worldwide.

The overarching goal of the ISO 14000 environmental management standards is to assist organizations in minimizing their adverse effects on the environment by offering guidance based on best universal practices. Mirroring the structure of ISO 9001 for quality management, ISO 14001 emphasizes three fundamental commitments in its environmental policy: the prevention of pollution, ensuring compliance with environmental legislation, and the continual improvement of the EMS to enhance overall environmental performance.

By using ISO 14001 as a strategic tool, organizations can effectively control their environmental aspects, adhere to legal and statutory requirements, and often realize significant cost savings.

The benefits of ISO 14001:2015 are substantial, including a demonstrable improvement in environmental performance driven by leadership, potential cost savings through resource efficiency and waste minimization, a reduced likelihood of pollution incidents and associated costs, guaranteed compliance with environmental legislation, an enhanced brand image appealing to environmentally conscious customers, better internal focus and communication regarding environmental issues, and ultimately improved profitability
