WHAT IS ISO 45001?

ISO 45001 marks a significant milestone as the first truly global standard for Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) management systems. This highly anticipated standard offers a robust framework designed to significantly increase workplace safety, proactively reduce occupational health and safety risks, and enhance the overall health and well-being of employees.

By implementing ISO 45001, organizations can achieve continuous improvement in their OH&S performance. Its universal applicability extends to all organizations, irrespective of their size, industry, or the nature of their business operations. Furthermore, ISO 45001 is intentionally structured for seamless integration into an organization’s existing management processes, sharing the same high-level structure found in other prominent ISO management system standards like ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. Adopting a risk-based approach, ISO 45001 ensures effectiveness and promotes continual improvement to adapt to an organization’s evolving context.

Replacing the previous OHSAS 18001 standard, achieving ISO 45001 certification serves as a powerful demonstration of an organization's commitment to operating a best-practice Occupational Health and Safety Management System, leading to a reduced likelihood of workplace accidents and legislative breaches, alongside improvements in overall organizational performance.

The significant benefits of using the ISO 45001 framework include establishing robust controls to ensure legal compliance, significantly increasing health and safety awareness throughout the organization and fostering active employee participation in safety matters, enhancing the organization's reputation by achieving an internationally recognized benchmark for social responsibility, reducing absenteeism and employee turnover by better managing workplace hazards, and potentially benefiting from reduced insurance premiums by demonstrating an effective OHS management system
